From a distance, the towering rock formations of Tobermory, Ontario’s Flowerpot Island look like giant planters built by human hands to display colorful flowers. The enormous rock pillars which attract visitors from across the globe have been forged by centuries of relentless wind, rain, and snowfall. Local lore states that the iconic pillars are the petrified remains of two star-crossed lovers who unsuccessfully escaped from warring islands in search of a peaceful life.

Travelers can visit Flowerpot Island via boat and spend several hours hiking, swimming, or snorkeling. The turquoise waters of Lake Huron are quite cold, but the lovely jewel-toned color is reminiscent of the Caribbean. Flowerpot Island is also home to a cave and a historical lighthouse which serves cold drinks to thirsty hikers. You may not spot many flowers while exploring Flowerpot Island, but you will see plenty of rugged trees, rocks, and a pristine expanse of Lake Huron.
