Once upon a time, way back in December 2019, a cream-colored fisherman sweater worn by Chris Evans in the Rian Johnson-directed whodunit Knives Out was enough of a menswear statement to catch headlines. (Though, of course, we’re still talking about cinematic fisherman sweaters.) Little did we know that, in the Knives Out cinematic universe, there was even more sartorial intrigue to come.
But our criteria for attention-grabbing garments has shifted greatly since then—and I’d argue that 2022 has been the kookiest year for red carpet style we’ve seen in decades. It follows, then, that Monday’s premiere of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was at least the kookiest red carpet of the month. Though the Los Angeles event was short one very notable dresser without the film’s star, Daniel Craig, in attendance, the rest of the celebs present still showed out: Kumail Nanjiani wore a shiny two-toned suit that looked like an optical illusion. Leslie Odom Jr. wore a flowy Dolce & Gabbana kit similar in its pale bluish hue similar to the color of Berry Blue Go-Gurt. Regé-Jean Page hit several trends at once in a double-breasted jacket and wide-legged pants with contrast stitching, cushy loafers, and a deep red mock-neck shirt. Up-and-coming actor Olly Sholotan held it down for night shorts in a really fun KidSuper set.

While the batty aesthetics of Glass Onion do contribute to it being especially well-suited for menswear’s kooky new era, “galaxy brain” dressing has become the prevailing trend for all sorts of celebrity events. Tough to say where Craig would’ve fallen on this phenom—he wore the fashion equivalent of an off-duty office worker’s collared shirt and khaki pants to the film’s Spanish premiere—but who knows what 2023’s got planned.
